He cavorted with prostitutes and shady characters, and used them as subjects for even religious paintings scandalous in a tug of war with the current trends which tended to artificiality, gaudiness and idealism. Many of the first versions of his paintings ended up in private collections after being rejected by the church. He broke new frontiers in the Baroque style, “Put the ‘oscuro’ in chiaroscuro” and inspired countless young artists of his time and after to innovate, leaving behind a whole school of “Carravagisti” to carry on his legacy.
