A weekend walking along the wild ridges of the Rocche, deep sandy-walled cliffs that suddenly open between the gentle hills of Roero. The Rocche can reach drops of hundreds of metres creating peaks of enchanting and imposing shapes, where you can easily spot archaeological finds. Majestic natural amphitheatre, where you can venture following the farmers’ paths, dotted with typical ciabot, oddly shaped huts still used today as storage rooms for farm tools, shelter against bad weather and hiding places for romantic escapes.

Weekend proposal:
Saturday: Arrival at Montà and reception at the Ecomuseum of the Rocche of Roero, where you will receive maps and illustrative material regarding the paths and the lunch bundle. Departure for naturalistic trekking along the Sentiero del Castagno (Chestnut Tree Path), a route that shows off centuries-old specimens of chestnut trees and agricultural activities by going through chestnut woods, peach orchards, hazelnut trees and vineyards and packed lunch at a typical farmer’s ciabot. IT'S ALL ABOUT HONEY IN THE ROCCHE & ROERO

A weekend walking along the wild ridges of the Rocche, deep sandy-walled cliffs that suddenly open between the gentle hills of Roero. Between April and October more than 950 different botanical species come into bloom: 8 useful months for the bees to work, various fragrances and flavours for honey. In the villages of the Rocche, bees and beekeepers are natural inhabitants with a centuries-old tradition: through the farmers’ paths you will come across beehives and the Houses of the bees, rural ciabot built to keep farm tools, with a basic form of wall-mounted beehive in its interior for the breeding of bees, a method unique from the rest of Europe.

Weekend proposal:
Saturday: arrival at Montà and reception at the Ecomuseum of the Rocche of Roero, where you will receive maps and illustrative material regarding the thematic paths. Departure for naturalistic trekking along the Beekeeping Path, a route immersed in nature and in the humid areas of the Rocche and comes across the beehive ciabot through fabulous wooden flights of steps. Departure for the Sentiero del Castagno (Path of the Chestnut); along this route you will enjoy the diversity of the landscape of Roero: from the glades of centuries-old chestnut trees to the vineyards that cling to the cliffs of the sandy rock formations, where you will be able to see the thousand-year-old geological history of the territory. Lunch at a typical restaurant based on traditional flavours and recipes of Roero. Guided tour of the Naturalistic Museum of Vezza d’Alba, where you can learn more about the geological history of the rock formations, and closely admire their vegetation and wildlife. Tour of the crotin of Montaldo Roero, underground tunnels dug in the tuff and used as cellars, and tasting of local wines.
Sunday: Departure for naturalistic trekking along the Sentiero della Masca Micilina (Path of the Masca Micilina) in Pocapaglia, going through humid environments up to the scenic amphitheatre of the Rocca della Ghia, which opens the curtain to the Alps. The Rocche can reach drops of hundreds of metres and, due to their charm and majesty, folk legends originated about their magic formation and masche, witches who live in the most remote corners of the Rocche and play tricks and jokes on travellers passing by.

Departure for the Sentiero del Tartufo (Path of the Truffle), a route that goes through the paths traced by the trifolao and enters the thickest vegetation to reach the nebbiolo vineyards on the hill of San Bartolomeo. Sunday: Transfer to Pocapaglia and departure for the Sentiero della Masca Micilina (Path of the Masca Micilina) to reach the place where the presumed Masca was burnt at the stake during the Inquisition.
